  1. Welcome to Macworld's monthly Interactive CD-ROM.  This month we present Macworld's "Game Hall of Fame" winners in nine different categories! We have included demos where they exist and movies for the others.

  3. Plus this month's GameSpace looks at three games coming in the next few months that may be candidates for next year's Hall of Fame: Halo, Oni and Tribes 2.

  5. Reviews this month include the long awaited InDesign from Adobe. There's no demo as yet, but we'll keep pestering Adobe to create one for you to try. Other reviews of particular interest are Vellum Solids 99, Eudora Pro 4.2, and NetBarrier 1.0. Publishing gurus may also be interested in MrSID, and two Acrobat plug-ins.

If you're like us, always putting holiday shopping off until December, take a look at the Holiday Gifts pages which feature over 25 Web sites that can help you save time and money, without having to move from your computer. Just think, with the speech recognition products coming next year, we might be able to achieve nearly total motionlessness!

Of particular note, Pogue's Playground honors and displays the winners of our Musical Macs contest. We got lots of great entries for Best Video, Best Song, and Best Sound, so it was hard to choose. Thanks to everyone who contributed an entry. We plan to have additional contests in the future, so keep your eyes peeled and your ears clean.

  66. IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT DEMOS & SOFTWARE:
  67. Software provided on this CD-ROM has been compressed. All software must be
  68. uncompressed and installed onto your hard drive. If you are unable to play
  69. game demos or go online, or if movies play back poorly, you may be short of
  70. memory.  Quit other applications to free up more RAM and continue.

  72. Trouble-shooting & Memory problems:
  73.  
  74. If this CD interface fails to launch, there are several things you can do
  75. to remedy the problem:
  76.  
  77. 1)  Turn on the Virtual Memory using the Memory Control Panel and set your
  78. total memory to at least 16MB.  If you are using MacOS 7.5.5 or later this
  79. is the recommended solution.
  80.  
  81. 2)  To change memory allocation for a program, click once on the program's
  82. icon to select it, choose Get Info from the File menu, and set the
  83. Preferred Size to the desired amount.
  84.  
  85. 3)  Make sure you have enough memory to open the application you wish to
  86. run. To check your available memory use the "About this Computer..." menu
  87. option under the Apple menu while in the Finder.
  88.  
  89. 4) Quit any applications you are not current using in order to free up
  90. memory for the software on the CD-ROM.
  91.  
  92. Minimum System Requirements:
  93.  
  94. 1)  Mac OS compatible computer (with a Motorola Power PC Processor).
  95. 2)  System 7.5.3 or newer.
  96. 3) 14 inch color monitor with the capability of displaying 256 or more 
  97. colors at a resolution of 640 x 480 pixels.
  98. 4)  Double speed (2X) CD-ROM drive.
  99. 5)  QuickTime (QuickTime 3, Sound Manager 3.2).
  100. 6) 12 MB of free RAM.  At least 24 MB of physical RAM is recommended.  To
  101. see how much available RAM your computer has, choose "About this Macintosh"
  102. from the Apple Menu.

  108. LICENSE AGREEMENT FOR MACWORLD INTERACTIVE CD-ROM(TM) READ THIS AGREEMENT
  109. BEFORE USING THIS MACWORLD INTERACTIVE CD-ROM DISK ("CD"). BY USING THE CD
  110. YOU AGREE TO BE BOUND BY THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF THIS AGREEMENT. IF YOU
  111. DO NOT AGREE TO THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF THIS AGREEMENT, IMMEDIATELY
  112. RETURN THE UNUSED CD FOR A FULL REFUND OF MONIES PAID, IF ANY.

  114.      The  articles  and  other  textual  materials  from Macworld, software
  115. programs  and  associated  documentation,  utilities and other software
  116. and associated documentation, and other materials included on this CD and
  117. their compilation (collectively, the "Collection") are licensed to you
  118. subject  to the  terms and conditions of this Agreement by Mac Publishing
  119. LLC, having  a place  of  business  at  301  Howard  Street, San Francisco,
  120. CA 94105  ("Mac Publishing").  In addition to being governed by the terms
  121. and conditions of this  Agreement,  your  rights  to use the software
  122. programs and associated documentation are governed by the agreements for
  123. each such software program that  are set forth in and that shall be
  124. displayed by the operation of such programs (the "Software Agreements").
  125. Your rights to use other programs and materials  included  on the CD are
  126. also governed by any separate agreements distributed  with  those  programs
  127. and  materials  on  the  CD (the "Other Agreements").  In the event of any
  128. inconsistency between this Agreement and any  of  the  Software  Agreements
  129. or the Other Agreements, this Agreement shall govern. By using the
  130. Collection, in whole or in part, you agree to  be bound  by  the  terms and
  131. conditions of this Agreement. Mac Publishing
  132. Owns the  title  to  the  Collection  and  to  all  intellectual property
  133. rights therein,  except  insofar  as it contains materials that are
  134. proprietary to third-party  suppliers. All rights in the Collection except
  135. those expressly granted  to  you  in this Agreement are reserved to Mac
  136. Publishing and  such suppliers as their respective interests may appear.
  137.  
  138. 1. LIMITED LICENSE.
  139.      Mac Publishing grants you a limited, nonexclusive, nontransferable
  140. license to use the Collection on a single dedicated computer (excluding
  141. network servers). This Agreement and your rights hereunder shall
  142. automatically terminate if you fail to comply with any provision of this
  143. Agreement or any of the Software Agreements or the Other Agreements. Upon
  144. such termination, you agree to destroy the CD and all copies of the CD,
  145. whether lawful or not, that are in your possession or under your control.
  146.  
  147. 2. ADDITIONAL RESTRICTIONS.
  148.      A. You shall not (and shall not permit other persons or entities to)
  149. directly or indirectly, by electronic or other means, reproduce (except for
  150. archival purposes as permitted by law), publish, distribute, copy, rent,
  151. lease, sell, sublicense, assign, or otherwise transfer the Collection or
  152. any part thereof or this Agreement. Any attempt to do so shall be void and
  153. of no effect.
  154.      B. You shall not (and shall not permit other persons or entities to)
  155. use the Collection or any part thereof for any commercial purpose or
  156. reverse-engineer, decompile, disassemble, merge, modify, create derivative
  157. works of, or translate the Collection.
  158.      C. You shall not (and shall not permit other persons or entities to)
  159. remove or obscure Mac Publishing's or its suppliers' copyright, trademark,
  160. or other proprietary notices or legends from any portion of the Collection
  161. or any related materials.
  162.      D. You agree and certify that the Collection will not be exported
  163. outside the United States except as authorized and as permitted by the laws
  164. and regulations of the United States. If the Collection has been rightfully
  165. obtained outside of the United States, you agree that you will not reexport
  166. the Collection, except as permitted by the laws and regulations of the
  167. United States and the laws and regulations of the jurisdiction in which you
  168. obtained the Collection.

  170. 3. DISCLAIMER OF WARRANTY.
  171.      A. THE COLLECTION AND CD ARE PROVIDED "AS IS" WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY
  172. KIND, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, ANY WARRANTY
  173. OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. THE ENTIRE RISK AS
  174. TO THE RESULTS AND PERFORMANCE OF THE CD, THE COLLECTION, AND OTHER
  175. MATERIAL THAT IS PART OF THE COLLECTION IS ASSUMED BY YOU.  MAC PUBLISHING
  176. AND ITS SUPPLIERS ASSUME NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR DEFECTS IN THE CD OR THE
  177. ACCURACY OR APPLICATION OF OR ERRORS OR OMISSIONS IN THE CD OR THE
  178. COLLECTION.  Mac Publishing AND ITS SUPPLIERS DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE
  179. FUNCTIONS CONTAINED IN THE COLLECTION WILL MEET YOUR REQUIREMENTS, OR THAT
  180. THE OPERATION OF THE CD OR THE COLLECTION WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED OR
  181. ERROR-FREE, OR THAT ANY DEFECTS IN THE CD OR THE COLLECTION WILL BE
  182. CORRECTED. IN NO EVENT SHALL MAC PUBLISHING OR ITS SUPPLIERS BE LIABLE FOR
  183. ANY DIRECT, INDIRECT, SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES
  184. ARISING OUT OF THE USE OF OR INABILITY TO USE THE CD OR THE COLLECTION,
  185. EVEN IF MAC PUBLISHING OR ITS SUPPLIERS HAVE BEEN ADVISED OF THE LIKELIHOOD
  186. OF SUCH DAMAGES OCCURRING.  MAC PUBLISHING AND ITS SUPPLIERS SHALL NOT BE
  187. LIABLE FOR ANY LOSS, DAMAGES, OR COSTS ARISING OUT OF BUT NOT LIMITED TO:
  188. LOST PROFITS OR REVENUE; LOSS OF USE OF THE CD OR THE COLLECTION; LOSS OF
  189. DATA OR EQUIPMENT; COST OF RECOVERING SOFTWARE, DATA, OR MATERIALS IN THE
  190. COLLECTION; THE COST OF SUBSTITUTE SOFTWARE, DATA, OR MATERIALS IN THE
  191. COLLECTION; CLAIMS BY THIRD PARTIES; OR OTHER SIMILAR COSTS. Some states do
  192. not allow exclusion or limitation of implied warranties or limitation of
  193. liability for incidental or consequential damages, so the above limitations
  194. exclusions may not apply to you.
  195.      B. IN NO EVENT SHALL MAC PUBLISHING'S OR ITS SUPPLIERS' TOTAL
  196. LIABILITY TO YOU FOR ALL DAMAGES, LOSSES, AND CAUSES OF ACTION (WHETHER IN
  197. CONTRACT, TORT, OR OTHERWISE) EXCEED THE AMOUNT PAID BY YOU FOR THE
  198. COLLECTION.

  200. 4. U.S. GOVERNMENT RESTRICTED RIGHTS.
  201.      The Collection is licensed subject to RESTRICTED RIGHTS. Use,
  202. duplication, or disclosure by the U.S. Government or any person or entity
  203. acting on its behalf is subject to restrictions as set forth in subdivision
  204. (c)(1)(ii) of the Rights in Technical Data and Computer Software Clause at
  205. DFARS (48 CFR 252.227-7013) for DoD contracts, in paragraphs (c)(1) and (2)
  206. of the Commercial Computer Software Restricted Rights clause in the FAR
  207. (48CFR 52.227-19) for civilian agencies, or, in the case of NASA, in clause
  208. 18-52.227-86(d) of the NASA Supplement to the FAR, or in other comparable
  209. agency clauses. The contractor/manufacturer is Mac Publishing, LLC, 301
  210. Howard Street, San Francisco, CA 94105.

  212. 5. GENERAL PROVISIONS.
  213.      Nothing in this Agreement constitutes a waiver of Mac Publishing's or
  214. its suppliers' rights under U.S. copyright laws or any other federal,
  215. state, local, or foreign law. This agreement constitutes the entire
  216. agreement between the parties with respect to the Collection and the CD and
  217. supersedes all prior or contemporaneous understandings or agreements,
  218. written or oral, regarding such matter. You are responsible for
  219. installation, management, and operation of the Collection; however, if you
  220. have questions or problems regarding the CD or the Collection, you can call
  221. 1.877.243.9863 (from the U.S. only) or email cd@macworld.com. This
  222. Agreement shall be construed, interpreted, and governed under New York law,
  223. applicable to agreements made and to be performed in such state. If any
  224. provision of this Agreement shall be held by a court of competent
  225. jurisdiction to be illegal, invalid or unenforceable, the remaining
  226. provisions shall remain in full force and effect.
